The Classic Stirrer - Left or Right Hand - Wood Spatula Spurtle featured image

The Classic Stirrer

The Classic Stirrer suits a very wide range of cooking applications. It works beautifully in pretty much every cooking vessel - pots, pans, wok and more. The Classic Stirrer is handmade from selected salvaged and recycled Australian hardwood timbers which are sourced by the maker. The Classic Stirrer is 34 cm (13 1/2 inches) long and 6 cm (2 1/2 inches) wide with a handle thickness of about 1.8 cm (3/4 inch). The working blade is about 15 cm (6 inches) long. The utensil has a gentle curve along the blade and a slight dish in its shape and is canted to either left or right as appropriate. The working tip is very slightly dished but when the Stirrer is at it's working angle, the breadth of the tip of the blade presents mostly a flat area of contact with the surface of the pan ... allowing for forward and backward scraping or spreading. The Classic Stirrer is an 'all-rounder' and is the most versatile utensil in the Gilmour-designed kitchen range. Functionally, the Classic Stirrer is lightweight yet with a solid feel and is perfectly balanced. Available in left and right handed versions, it is comfortable for use in either hand ... and can be used reversed. Aesthetically, the Classic Stirrer is slim with sensuous elegance and graceful organic curves ... and is smooth as silk in the hand. The Classic Stirrer evolved one night out of a need for a better stirring utensil. It is the original cooking utensil I designed and made to fulfil my own needs and is one of my best-selling utensils in face-to-face sales on my long-running market stall in Port Douglas, Australia. This design was first conceived in 2001. This product listing is for an item which will be selected from available stock ... or made to order. The item shipped will be like the pictures in shape and style but will vary in colour and wood type. The wood used is from select stock which is dried and seasoned and is ultimately suitable for utensil making. Rest-assured, you will receive the best selected stock item of the day. Care for this utensil is very simple. Don't be scared to use it and wash it in the sink using normal practices ... hot water and dishwashing detergent are fine. Preferably keep it out of the dishwasher, although experience has proven that it won't kill it if the utensil ends up in there occasionally ... though the intense detergent will prematurely harm the surface and finish. Oiling is not really necessary ... but you can oil it if you want. This utensil is sanded to a very smooth finish and is fully sealed with a penetrating food-neutral resin product. You do not need to oil this item as the sealing process creates an effective moisture barrier which will greatly slow down the oxidation process during the early years of its life. The utensil will last you a very long time and will age beautifully. THE BACKSTORY ... "I became really frustrated with lack of suitable cooking utensils available in kitchen stores. There was also the issue that most were made of softwoods which grew black mould in our wet season summers here in tropical northern Australia. It became quickly apparent the only realistic course of action was to make my own. I had a clear mental image of the design I wanted and ... made a prototype the next morning. I was using it that night. I had no intention of making any number or selling my utensils ... this journey was purely about me. But, after a swag of friends cottoned on to the design during dinner parties ... and giving way too many away for beers ... I decided to start selling handmade utensils and other homewares objects. This was the first utensil I designed and made ... so, it became my classic ... the Classic Stirrer. The year was 2001." - Bob Gilmour: designer. THE NITTY GRITTY ... Traditional Spatula - Left or Right Hand - Wood Spurtle featured image

Traditional Spatula

This is a traditional spatula with ergonomically comfortable handle and functionally designed to work in all pots, pans, bowls and woks. Left or Right Handed. The Traditional Spatula is handmade from selected salvaged and recycled Australian hardwood timbers which are sourced by the maker. The Spatula is 30 cm (11 3/4 inches) long and 6 cm (2 1/2 inches) wide with a handle thickness of about 1.8 cm (3/4 inch). The working blade is about 11 cm (4 1/2 inches) long. The utensil has a gentle curve along the blade and a slight dish in its shape and is canted to either left or right as appropriate. The working tip is very slightly dished but when the Spatula is at it's working angle, the tip will present some of it's width as a flat surface to the pan. This is a great utensil for all stir fry and mixing or stirring tasks. It works really well for casseroles and occasionally turning contents of a slow cooker. Use it for making sauces, Bolognese, gravies, fried rice, curries ... or just scrambling eggs. The Traditional Spatula is one of the heavier-bodied implements that I make, so you can apply a fair bit of force with this utensil. The Traditional Spatula is one of my best-selling utensils in face-to-face sales on my long-running market stall in Port Douglas, Australia. This design was first conceived in about 2003. This product listing is for an item which will be selected from available stock ... or made to order. The utensil will last you a very long time and will age beautifully. THE BACKSTORY ... "Visitors to my market stall in Port Douglas Australia will know this utensil as 'Bev' ... a curvaceous yet stylish workhorse who is just as much at home in the most traditional of kitchens ... or the most modern. Several years ago, a friend named Bev approached me with a pretty tattered looking old wooden stirrer and asked if I could make her something similar. Turns out, she had owned it for 25 years and had brought it with her to Australia from New Zealand when she emigrated. Yes, I agreed, it was certainly time for an upgrade. Bev's utensil was rounded like a traditional spatula, but had a horrible flat handle ... I can't imagine it would have been comfortable at all to use. I created a stirrer that showed similar fullness and roundness in the business end, but added a curvaceous comfortable handle ... and named it 'Bev' in honour of ... Bev. I have been using this utensil in my own cooking since the very first ones I made for Bev in about 2003. It works really well for me frying or blending in round-sided pans and is a great tool for use when mixing dry ingredients in a mixing bowl. I also really like this stirrer when I have meat in the slow cooker ... it's a great length ... not too long ... and the short stout blade makes turning solid lumps of meat easy ... and it's also wonderful for mixing slow-cooked casserole bases" - Bob Gilmour: designer. Small Pan Stirrer - Left or Right Hand - Wood Spatula Spurtle featured image

Small Pan Stirrer

This is a short beautifully comfortable stirrer and tasting spoon which works perfectly in small pans and pots. Great for sauces or sautéing mushrooms in butter. The Small Pan Stirrer is handmade from selected salvaged and recycled Australian hardwood timbers which are sourced by the maker. The Stirrer is 24 cm (9 1/2 inches) long and 4 cm (1 1/2 inches) wide with a handle thickness of about 1.8 cm (3/4 inch). The working blade is about 14 cm (5 1/2 inches) long. The utensil has a gentle curve along the blade and a slight dish in its shape and is canted to either left or right as appropriate. The upwardly curved blade is slightly flattened along its bottom edge when laid over and is designed to provide excellent surface contact around the edges of small skillet pans and roundish small sauce pans. This stirrer is also an ideal size to use as a tasting spoon and works well as a whisk in small bowls. This implement could also be used as a server / spreader for jams or as a honey drizzler. It's also great to serve spreads, dips and thick sauces out of small dishes and ramekins. In face-to-face sales at my long-running market stall in Port Douglas, Australia, many of my customers purchase this utensil as an handy addition to several other full-sized utensils ... and I've additionally sold quite a few to potters for use on the pottery wheel because "the shape just works ... apparently". This design was first conceived in about 2007. The utensil will last you a very long time and will age beautifully. THE BACKSTORY ... "One of my favourite utensil shapes ... of my own designs ... has always been the longer Wok Stirrer. I love the long drawn-out elegant look that it presents. I had always wondered if I could adapt that shape into a smaller design ... after being inspired by an exaggerately curvaceous French butter knife on travels years ago. So one day in the workshop, I drew some lines on a piece of wood and scaled the blade proportions down by eye and added an appropriately smaller handle section. After a couple iterations I ended up with a shape I was really happy with ... and haven't changed it since. That was in about 2007." - Bob Gilmour: designer. THE NITTY GRITTY ... Paddle Stirrer - Left or Right Hand - Wood Spatula Spurtle featured image

Paddle Stirrer

The Paddle Stirrer is exactly as it's name suggests ... a paddle ... for moving food such as stir fry around a big flat pan ... or turning risotto in a dish. The Paddle Stirrer is handmade from selected salvaged and recycled Australian hardwood timbers which are sourced by the maker. The Paddle is 28 cm (11 inches) long and 9 cm (3 1/2 inches) wide with a handle thickness of about 1.8 cm (3/4 inch). The working blade is about 15 cm (6 inches) long. The utensil has a gentle curve along the blade and a slight dish in its shape and is canted to either left or right as appropriate. The working tip is very slightly dished but when the Paddle is at it's working angle, the tip edge presents most of it's width as a flat surface to the pan. The Paddle is great for all stir fry and mixing or stirring tasks in shallow pans or skillets. Use it for braising or frying meats, turning risotto, frying and caramelising onions or simmering sauces. This is the shortest cooking utensil in the Gilmour Design range, but has the widest blade. It is very stout and extremely strong and, due to it's wide shape, also makes a very good serving utensil. The Paddle is also well suited for use in shallow woks. One of the unique strengths of the Paddle Stirrer is that whilst it can be held by the handle like a normal stirrer, it can also be grasped down close to the blade and swished around just like a ... paddle ... or table tennis bat. This gives the utensil excellent control in situations like fast-frying or searing meat strips in a very hot pan or on a griddle plate. The Paddle was first designed and made in about 2004. Wok Stirrer - Left or Right Hand - Wood Spatula Spurtle featured image

Wok Stirrer

The Wok Stirrer design perfectly fits both round and flat-bottomed woks ... and it is safe to use on all Teflon-coated woks and round-bottomed frying pans. The Wok Stirrer is handmade from selected salvaged and recycled Australian hardwood timbers which are sourced by the maker. The Wok Stirrer is 35 cm (13 1/2 inches) long and 6 cm (2 1/2 inches) wide with a handle thickness of about 1.8 cm (3/4 inch). The working blade is about 18 cm (7 inches) long. The utensil has an elegant long gently curved blade with a slight dish in its shape and is canted to either left or right as appropriate. The bottom shape of the working blade is evenly curved along its length to allow for excellent surface contact inside the walls of most woks. The handle shape is such that the stirrer can be comfortably grasped around the neck and rolled in the hand going around the wok. Furthermore, this utensil can be held around the top of the blade and used in a whisk or paddle motion. This is a great implement for moving food around in the wok. It's the longest handled utensil in the Gilmour Design kitchen range, so you can keep your hand a fair way from the heat. It's also very strong because of it's thickness in the handle and neck ... to compensate for it's extra length. The Wok Stirrer also makes a great mixing spatula ... for cake and bread mixes ... because it works really well in any round bottomed vessel. It is a more specialised utensil than most others in the range ... it does a narrow range of jobs, but it does them really well. The design first came to be in about 2001. "I cook in a large old cast-iron wok a lot. It is quite heavy and can be made very hot. I wanted a wok utensil that was quite slim but evenly curved so as it could be easily 'pulled' around the sides of the wok … in a nice fluid motion, often holding the implement by the neck. Many store-bought utensils just don't suit wok cooking ... or at least not for westerners cooking with a wok ... many are too square, too short or too flimsy. This design became my solution to a growing frustration with commercial cooking utensils that simply didn't do a good job for me ... the design has remained unchanged since about 2001." - Bob Gilmour: designer. The Flat Spat - Left or Right Hand - Wood Spatula Spurtle featured image

The Flat Spat

The Flat Spat is the perfect cooking utensil for stir-fries and sauces in large flat pans or skillets and also is absolutely wonderful as a deep pot stirrer. This utensil is a long robust general stirring and scraping tool. The neck is intentionally thick in section so that the Flat Spat can be used as a heavy duty workhorse. The Flat Spat is available in left and right handed configurations. The Flat Spat is handmade from selected salvaged and recycled Australian hardwood timbers which are sourced by the maker. The stirrer is 35 cm (13 3/4 inches) long and 6 cm (2 1/2 inches) wide with a handle thickness of about 1.8 cm (3/4 inch). The working blade is about 18 cm (7 inches) long. The utensil has a gentle curve along the blade and a slight dish in its shape and is canted to either left or right as appropriate. The working tip is very slightly dished but when the Flat Spat is at it's working angle, the tip edge will present most of it's width as a flat surface to the pan. The Flat Spat is a dream in casserole pots and slow cookers where its flat end (when laid over a little) makes good bottom contact while the small radius corners take care of the edges of the receptacle. Use it for making sauces, bolognese, gravies, fried rice, curries and generally turning or flipping things. The Flat Spat is the most robust of the kitchen implements that I make. The long flat blade is quite thin on the end but carries up to a solid strong neck and handle ... and is a little longer than most of the other utensils. This is a tool that you can put quite a bit of weight behind if you wish. It will work very well in most kitchen situations although its true strengths are in large flat pans and deep pots. Additionally, this utensil is also a great utility tool ... for those occasions where you need something strong to cleave or ream something out ... like separating the meat out of crayfish tails or prising things open. But at the same time. you can also use the Flat Spat for tiny tasks ... like 'spooning' out of small ramekins and dishes, by holding it down right on the blade and using like a knife. The long neck of this utensil allows for a variety of ways in which this tool can be grasped and used ... but I personally really like to hold it around the top of the blade and use in a whisking motion. The Flat Spat is a very versatile cooking and general purpose tool in the kitchen. The design was first conceived in about 2002. This product listing is for an item which will be selected from available stock ... or made to order. The item shipped will be like the pictures in shape and style but will vary in colour and wood type. The utensil will last you a very long time and will age beautifully. THE BACKSTORY ... "I always wanted a utensil which was good for making sauces and gravies ... as well as de-glazing flat pans and pots. Therefore, I needed to design an implement which was fairly flat-ended for good surface contact and with a substantial strong handle. I named the final design The Flat Spat because it has quite a flat blade shape but conforms to a curvaceous spatula genre." - Bob Gilmour: designer. THE NITTY GRITTY ... Small Muddler for Caipirinha, Mojito - Wood Muddle Stick featured image

Small Muddler for Caipirinha, Mojito

This Caipirinha and Caprioska small wood muddler is the smallest of my bar and kitchen muddling stick range and is designed for use in small to medium glasses. It's also a great muddler for Old Fashioneds and similar drinks. Besides being perfect for muddling ingredients for most small-glass cocktails, the short muddler is also great in the kitchen. Grind up spices straight on your cutting board or on the bench top. A muddler is a wonderfully stylish tool for making nice smooth garlic paste or breaking down basil or coriander. You'll find plenty of uses for it. You can use this muddler for breaking food items straight in the pan or wok for fusion-style east-west dishes. Then, go ahead and use it as as stirrer. The short muddler is very comfortable to use and is very strong. It is double sealed, so you can use it in the bar as well as the kitchen ... although please have one for each if you're going to do both. Like all of my utensils, your muddler is sanded to a very smooth finish and fully sealed with two applications of food neutral 2 part sealer. Unlike utensils which are only coated in oil (vegetable or mineral) which washes off the first time you wash them, the sealing process that I use ensures that your muddler will keep its color and look great for years. Your muddler is pretty much maintenance-free. If it finds it's way into the dishwasher by mistake ... don't panic ... it will be OK, as long as it's only occasional. To clean up, treat it like any of your hand-wash items and wipe dry after use. If you plan to use you muddler purely in the cocktail bar, PLEASE DON'T OIL IT ... nobody likes an oil slick in their drink. Utensil Rest for Spoon Stirrer Muddler - Best Stove-side Helper featured image

Utensil Rest for Spoon Stirrer Muddler

The best solution to a puddle of drips on the stove top or side bench is to use a spoon rest. When the cooking utensil is laid on it, drips stay on the rest. Spoon and utensil rests take many forms ... these rests are created in the same style as the Gilmour Design range of cooking stirrers, spoons and utensils ... with elegant curvaceous simplicity. Gilmour Design Utensil Rests are handmade from selected salvaged and recycled Australian hardwood timbers which are sourced by the maker. Each rest is unique and all vary in size and shape ... being made to organically follow the grain and features in the piece of wood. They mostly average in size between 13 and 16 cm in length (5 and 6 inches) by 6 or 7 cm (2 1/2 inches) wide with a total height of around 1.8 cm (3/4 inch). The rests are shaped with a gradual rise towards both ends and low point in the middle where the spoon or utensil sits. Generally there is also a small amount of dishing in the top face of the rest to aid collection of any drips from the utensil. Utensil Rests from Gilmour Design are designed to take up a minimal amount of bench or stove-top space and to complement the range of curvaceous utensils. Furthermore, these minimal design rests are also wonderful display dishes for small curios or jewellery items. Muddler Mojito - Wood Cocktail and Kitchen Muddle Stick featured image

Muddler Mojito

The Muddler Mojito is an all-round performer of moderate size with elegant lines and exuding sculptural beauty. It is a medium to heavy weight muddler. The size is appropriate for use in a cocktail shaker as well as fitting neatly into any glass. Furthermore, the Muddler Mojito is a great choice for use in the kitchen as a crushing tool. This muddler is perfectly balanced and can be gripped by the shaft or held by the knob of the handle. You can use both ends of this muddler. The flat angled end is great for general cocktail muddling as well as grinding jobs as a kitchen muddler. The rounded 'handle' end is perfect for heavier mashing or squeezing into the side of a glass or shaker. The Muddler Mojito is heavy enough to feel very substantial, yet can be left standing in most glasses without fear of toppling over. This is a beautiful implement with sensuous lines that will be most welcome in any cocktail bar or household. This utensil is sanded to a very smooth finish and is fully sealed with a penetrating food-neutral resin product. You do not need to oil this item as the sealing procedure creates an effective moisture barrier which will greatly slow down the oxidation process during the early years of its life. The utensil will last you a very long time and will age beautifully. NOTE :: FOR THIS SALE LISTING, ANY PURCHASED ITEM WILL BE SELECTED FROM EXISTING STOCK OR MADE-TO-ORDER.
